Isn't it interesting how she says "lean on Jesus," but he never mentions Jesus. What a false prophet he is.

This may be the most perfect scene ever filmed.

Mitchem is singing the right words, she's singing the harmony words though. That's why you don't hear him saying it. Everything else you said was right, but Mitchem is singing the actual words.

I always loved Sigourney Weaver's portrayal of Ripley, but Lillian Gish is every bit as heroic in this astounding performance. What a fantastic, frightening film!

Creepy and beautiful and profound. This is interesting on several different levels.

But what's interesting about this is that the words to the hymn don't even mention Jesus in it. So while Powell is singing the right words, I think it's indicative of him because he is "doing the right things" to come off as prophetic, but Gish's Jesus is used to persuade to us her true religious beliefs.

Still one of my favourite films-truly a masterpiece. Mitchum was mesmerising and terrifying. Everybody should be obligated to see this movie at least once.

I'm still amazed that this film was so poorly received in 1955. Its utterly brilliant. Kept Laughton from directing another movie and kept Mitchum from an Oscar nomination.
