It was in the early 1970's when I first saw this movie on TV. I was about 10 years old. The next day, we went to church and one of the hymns sung that day was "Leaning on the Everlsting Arms". I remember a chill going up my spine upon hearing that song.

Angel of mercy Lillian singing along with psychopath killer Bob is typical of the poetic irrationality of this film. Laughton was working at the deepest levels of our mentality.

Why was Robert Mitchum not ever nominated for an Academy Award?

@BoundaryShift Part of what drew Mitchum to accept this role was that in is youth he had travelled the country, bumming in hobo camps, and he encountered real backwoods communities where, in his own words "people would believe anything a man said as long as he had a bible in his hands." So it is kind of a warning to beware charlatans and false prophets in a way.

I'm crazy about this movie. Gish and Mitchum were two of the most unique talents in the history of cinema. Together, they're pure magic

Isn't it interesting how she says "lean on Jesus," but he never mentions Jesus. What a false prophet he is.

"This is the story of love and hate... this hand made Cane kill his brother... these 4 fingers go straight to the soul" - Radio Raheem
She sings back at him because she's showing him she's still awake and not afraid to give that bastard a face full of buckshot.
