Time-lapse of Carey Beebe stringing a new unfretted clavichord.

This instrument after an original in Hamburg by J.C. Gerlach is strung with nine diameters of wire, ranging from .012˝ Yellow Brass (70% copper) in the treble, to .027˝ Red Brass (90% copper) in the extreme bass.

This instrument is a private commission under construction for a Sydney musician.

  • I can gladly provide you strings: Please send me a private message with details of your instrument.

  • How long did it take to string this instrument?

  • There are 122 strings on this model, taking a bit over five hours straight to wind the loops and install. A still was taken after every four strings. With various other things happening at the same time, this video shows the stringing done over two days.

  • Can't you use an electric drill or something like a electric screwdriver to do the preliminary winding? Or something like an inverted, slipery plastic cone where you put the pin while you do the winding and then just remove the cone and insert the ready wound pin in its place??

  • I like your website nad keeping the Harpsichord dream alive is a noble thing....

    If I may aska question:

Ive heard of some harpsichords occasionally having "stops" like an organ, what/how does this change the sound, and is k159 by Scarlatti your fave harpsichord piece,it is thine fabvourite!

  • Thanks for the answer, much appreciated.
