I've seen all of these apart from Midnight - you've inspired me to check it out. :)
I was really underwhelmed by The Awful Truth personally. And you're missing one of my favourites - The Palm Beach Story.

@grabit1 I need to watch it again. I do love Frank Capra. And Stanwyck/Cooper, who were also fabulous in Ball of Fire.

@90lysander I'd agree that MEET JOHN DOE doesn't rate as screwball comedy. Although I think it is a treasure nevertheless.

"It happened one night" should be in the top 10. But I do love all of your choices.

I hate to say since De Niro is for me usually truly a wretched waste in almost any movie unless he is playing somebody stupid, which I have no doubt he actually is, but he positively shone in Midnight Run, one of the few modern comedies even close to these,

#5 My Man Godfrey, I would relace with "It happened one Night" (1934)

maybe because people want to enjoy in such a depressing time

How can you have a top ten screwball list without It Happened One Night??? Crazy.
As for Meet John Doe, I think it's too dark to qualify. Barely even a comedy.

I like your list. Cary Grant could've gotten a best actor award in a screwball comedy if they had given such an award. I loved Mr.Deeds Goes To Town, but I wish there had been room for Meet John Doe. I wonder why so many of the great screwball comedies seem to have been made in the 1930s?
