Artist Statement:
"To create a window of a familiar place that is instantly recognizable to a stranger is an amazing thing. Because I desire to link my artworks intimately with the community, I have taken on this mission to draw Portland's iconic landmarks as well as familiar neighborhood places. As a once-and-future technical illustrator and archaeologist, I am fascinated with history and the elements of classical architecture that appear all around us. Through art, I have found a daily practice that enables me to quietly observe my surroundings with a purpose. My drawings are documentary artifacts that capture a visual record of the city. Without the aid of a photograph, I draw on location, sketching the composition. Later I embellish the details. As visual inspiration for my current series, I am indebted to the visions of Albrecht Durer and his master woodcuts, etchings, and engravings. Recently I have entered the printshop to etch on my own copperplate in the Renaissance tradition. Until I step aboard a boat to France, find me at a café drawing in my book."
