This race completed Eric Heiden's famous sweep of all five speed skating events at Lake Placid, and marked the first time any athlete won five individual golds at a single Olympics.
Heiden's race begins at the 5:25 mark of this video. Part 2 contains the end of the race, and Keith Jackson's interview with Heiden. ABC showed the race tape delayed in prime time, and skipped the segment between 2800 meters and 7200 meters.
GOLD - Eric Heiden (USA), 14:28.13
SILVER - Piet Kleine (NED), 14:36.03
BRONZE - Tom Erik Oxholm (NOR), 14:36.60
With all due regards to the US Hockey team, what Eric Heiden did in 1980 FAR, FAR surpasses
what the US Hockey Team did. Case closed!

I live in upstate NY and went to Lake Placid. The rink was right alongside a street!! all you had to do was just look over and bam there they were. They wore gold uniforms and he just kicked butt. Although it was extremely cold (below zero most days with high winds) so I went about 1/2 way into the last race and saw him win.

I started laughing when he said 'Back in 1964, but back then you don't have the specialists you don't have today' hats off to them that they did that without today's technology and equipment. Eric was amazing : D

Eric and Beth are from West Allis, Wisconsin. I live in Wisconsin and when Eric won all the medals, it was big news here! I was in second grade and 8 years old during the 80 Olympics. Thanks for posting this. Brings back memories!!
