i fished out by pt. Reyes for years in 200 ft. of water, we always used colored plastic jigs and baited our hooks with chopped squid , when we used hooks with a colored plastic jig without any bait we never caught fish, fish have noses and theres plenty to eat on a reef so use a baited hook even with the bright colored hula jig

@UJONFTW There are a variety of things to use when rock fishing. In reality, they aren't hard to fish at all. In California a 2 hook rig with a half pound weight will get you down there, just toss some chopped or live bait on it and they will bite. I use colored jigs with no bait. Tiger pattern, black and purple in the morning with red and orange in the afternoon. Live bait for rock halibut (good luck) or you can use fish traps which are lead heads and rubber tails, they get tangles a lot.
