Italy's Crack Down on Immigration

Italy is vowing to come down hard on immigration laws, making illegal immigration a criminal offence and reducing the number of Immigrant camps in the capital. Here's more.

Rome's new mayor pledged to expel 20,000 immigrant criminals and knock down illegal camps put up by mostly eastern European Roma people.

[Gianni Alemanno, Rome's Mayor]:

"We have to face the problem of Roma camps with a tougher and more effective law that can allow us to expel and repatriate people more rigourously."

More than 500,000 Romanians are estimated to live in Italy, a number which Rome says jumped dramatically over the past year.

Crime and immigration were a top issue in the run-up to last month's parliamentary election, which Prime Minister Berlusconi overwhelmingly won.

"We are working on a security bill that will be very strict but respectful of all the European legislation,
we are aware that a just law means that we need to work at the integration of non Italian citizens but at the same time we need to reinforce bilateral cooperation with countries such as Libya and Romania."

Thousands of illegal immigrants cross over from the shores of Libya to southern Italy every year, usually risking their lives on rough seas in inadequate boats.

@fishyc150 i dont know what you mean by failed... but if you like to hate or say that serbia is better and should be allowed in the EU. its not gonna benefit you either. the EU is scam. im not proud to be part of the EU not because romania is a third world country(which is not true as i said we are very civilized) but because other countries abuse us by building factories in romania(and after romania they go to china a good example is nokia since were in the eu the borders are easy to pass.

@fishyc150 and its not a third world country. we are pretty civilized. its just gypsies that make us look bad. i live in a small town in romania and love everything. i would not go live anywhere else. people that left romania were too greedy or came back after a few years. its a pleasant place to live. free education that is recognized world wide free health care. we dont want gypsies to abuse these things like minorities did in the western countries. that why we segregate them.

@fishyc150 i hate that we are allowed in the EU all of our universities are now full of immigrants. we dont want minorities in our school system. but guess what we romanians did not want to be in the EU. Western countries wanted us because romania is a strategic place for the armies and business with turkey. the black sea is important commerce place. trust me we dont want a lot of regulations, integration of gypsies and foreign students in our universities.

Visit Serbia, it's a lively strong Christian country tarnished by bad press in the 90s... Not allowed in EU. Romania is a very near failed state and possibly the only White 3 rd world country. Allowed to join EU at great expense to everyone else. Another ireland, kept afloat. Ireland gives us pikies, Romania gives us the same...
