Excerpt from "Sons of Guns" episode "The Gun that Killed Osama"

Red Jacket gets a visit from Chris Kyle, former Navy SEAL and the United States' most decorated sniper. During a discussion with Flem (himself a former helicopter gunner in the U.S. Air Force), Flem "coin checks" Chris, and wins.

As I understand it, the killer was a fellow serviceman, a former Marine, who was suffering from PTSD and who Chris was trying to help overcome said disorder. Chris probably considered him a trustworthy friend, and let his guard down. :(

I have PTSD and I don't go shooting people who offer me help. Mental disorder is not freedom from culpability.

PTSD causes people to do things they don't normally do! It was not betrayal! It was the worst case of PTSD gone untreated for too long. Chris still would have tried to help him knowing the danger, and that is what he did. All of us veterans only have each other, Chris was going to be there no matter what and that is why he is the man and the hero that he will always be!

What you don't seem to understand is that PTSD changes a person and causes things like this to happen! Chris knew that, as all of us veterans do, and he still chose to help his brothers and sisters cause that is what any of us would do. Chris is a great man, and the man who shot him, I am sure, just didn't get help in time! R.I.P, Chris Kyle

That's exactly it. He trusted the other person and was betrayed when he had his back turned.
