US Marine Sgt. Rafael Peralta was wounded in combat and when fallen on the floor he pulled an enemy grenade under his body, absorbing the majority of the lethal blast and shrapnel which killed him instantly, but saved the lives of his fellow Marines. Mr Gates and the US Department of Defense decided not to grant the Medal of Honor to Sgt. Peralta mainly because Peralta was initially an "illegal alien" when he came to USA as a child with his family, and they don't want to support and praise that. This is wrong, this is a shame and an affront to the US Marines, US Military and every American soldier. Sgt. Rafael Peralta will always be remembered as an American hero, a patriot, a brave warrior, a loyal marine who paid the ultimate sacrifice without expecting anything in return, but Mr Robert M. Gates and his men will be always known as dishonest political puppets who used their political power to wrong an American hero.
Recently Members of Congress have asked Navy Secretary Ray Mabus to reconsider Sgt Peralta's case & award him the Medal of Honor. In the meantime the Navy is naming an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in honor of Sgt Peralta. Hopefully Sgt Peralta will finally receive the recognition he so graciously deserves. Semper Fi!

Does anyone know if he was ever able to get the medal of honor?

A true hero. Who cares if "initially" he was illegal. He became a citizen and was so when he paid the ultimate sacrifice. The man deserves the medal of honor.

My last name is Peralta and I went through bootcamp and the school of infantry with Rafael's little brother. Now we are both in 3rd battalion, 4th marines. Raffa deserves the MoH in my opinion. His whole family inspire me every day. They always welcomed me and protected me as their own. I love his sisters Isella and Karen. They're awesome. His family deserves this in the least.
