I'll bet that in wealthy, high-powered families like the Ewings you get sibling rivalry in spades. I think that Jock also drove his boys hard.
I remember a scene in Dallas where Bobby was telling someone how driven he was even as a young man. Where I remember him saying something like: "When I was in college, I HAD to make the varsity team. Then once I was on the team, I HAD to make captain".

JR was such a Crybaby in this scene. He makes Bobby earn his "Keep" at Ewing Oil, beats JR at his own Game in Business and then he goes on a Temper Tantrum. Jock could have said "Well be happy for him, you've taught him well."

JR always underestimated Bobby. He thought he was incompetent of succeeding in business. Remember, it was Bobby who got back the ewing oil name after the justice dept. took it from them 6 seasons later.
