brings back my childhood memories of Dr. S.L Roberson who just passed away he loved to see the choir march in to this thank you so much for posting I miss my Pastor thank you for posting....

@goodstiff The late great Clara Ward is given credit for initially having written this song, w/ Mahalia Jackson performing it. Others later added more & different verses to it. I know you asked this question over a year ago, but I don't see where anyone answered your question of, 'who wrote' How I Got Over. :-)

This service brings back so many memories. Fellowship, First Church of Deliverance, Christian Tabernacle, etc., Where are churchs and choirs that have services like this today?
-
Rev. Nicks was the pastor! he was minister of music before he became pastor.
Jimmy "JD" Dowell was the minister of music/director after Rev. Nicks became pastor, he passed away in December of 2004.
God Bless.

Is Rev. Nicks the choir director or the pastor. I know Rev Nicks is decsed. Is the choir director still living & if he is is he still there?

I 1st heard this song at my aunt's church which is also in detroit. I've loved it ever since. Great to hear it again!

This is the year Reverend Cleveland passed away. Reverend Nicks was already gone.

You are so right Goodstiff. First Church of Deliverance Choir (Chicago) use to sing this song. Chicago's Christ Tabernacle MBC Combined Choirs would have this song as their march in song every 4th Sunday evening. We would have a little break after service or most of the times no break and go right into our broadcast with Holy Thine (Lord, I want to be Holy). The Good old days with Rev. M. Brunson as our pastor on Madison St.
Can someone please tell me what year was this reunion concert?

@ProgressScoop this wasn't a reunion concert, this was the last musical at the old church, St. James moved into a new building the following sunday. this was in the fall of 1991.
Be Blessed.

The words are a little bit hard for me to understand. Are they using the traditional lyrics?
