  • I have a long neck banjo that was given to me and I always see people with them using a capo on the 3rd, but then I've read you have to have a spike on the 5th, but it doesn't look like you do, so what do you tune the 5th string to? Do you always play it capoed? If so, then what is the reason for a long-neck to begin with? It's all new to me right now. Anyway, you sound great on it!

  • @genericxanex Hi, Sorry this took so long for a reply. The invention of adding 3 extra frets to a banjo was first conceived by Pete Seeger. His reasoning for this was to allow him to be in a G tuning and be able to play down in E. The alternative would be to capo up very high and lose the bass notes. Usually the fifth string is tuned lower from the standard G' as you capo down. However, from the 3'rd fret up, it is common to use a separate 5th string capo. See Banjo Hangout.
