"Fresh Kills" is the strange name for a landfill that operated for 54 years as the repository for 150 million tons of New York City trash. It's been an eyesore three times the size of Central Park, but it's being turned into a place where New Yorkers will be able to escape the concrete jungle to hike, canoe, kayak, bike, and ride horses in a natural setting. The kicker is that the methane from garbage rotting underground will be collected and sold to heat Staten Island homes, with the proceeds going to New York City.
