We bought a Featherman drum-style chicken plucker. Here is a clip of it plucking some chickens on a batch of 8 week old Cornish-Rock cross meat birds.

  • how do you kill them first? just smack them on something?

  • @AmericanRaven19 I hang them upsidedown by the feet. Hanging them upside down makes the blood rush to their head and they get all mellow so they aren't flailing around. Plus, i think it distracts them because they are baffled by the world being upside down so they just look around with silly chicken eyes like they are high or something. Then I cut their throats with a scalpel and they bleed out.

  • Doesn't this bruise the chickens?

  • @ATPman1 No, bruising only happens while alive. The little rubber fingers are soft and don't tear up the birds unless you over scald them. Figuring out the right temperature and right about of time to scald them is the tricky part. We found that 140 degrees for one minute works.

  • Two things. 1st you forgot to add the seasoning. 2nd what about all the wasted water?

  • @usmcoth Wasted water isn't a big issue here, we have a well.

  • @ATPman1 You cant bruise the meat if there is no blood hence the reason you bleed out the carcass.
