Hey Stumpy, I'm going to be starting on my "Low-Buck Bench Build", in which I plan to build a top-notch traditional bench for under $250, including vises. I'm writing a blog on it over at Lumber Jocks. Just search "Low-Buck Bench", you'll find it.
I'm still sourcing the wood now, which will be the best pine I can find. Vises will use wooden screws cut on a Beall 1.5" threader. The design, which I'm still working on a bit, is a Roubo/Holtzapffel mix with a 4" thick solid top.
