In this case, no demon, but fairies show up and teach him how to play, only after he sticks the end of his little finger out of the circle, for it to be cut off by them. This is how the legend goes. When people pay compliments to a good lyre player he sometimes says: Well, what do you think? I learned to play like that on the cross road. It seems that every culture has similar legends. This reminds me of a legend we have here in Crete, according to which the Cretan musicians learned how to play the lyre (the most representative of all musical instruments of Crete) in abundance of art, by going to a deserted cross road around midnight and drawing there a circle on the ground, using a knife with a black hilt. Then they have to sit in the circle and play.
