The COO of BP spoke Monday to the Coastal Conservation Association. Mike Utsler vowed to continue to efforts to return the gulf to pre-spill condition, but one LSU professor claims the cleanup efforts left the gulf full of poison.

Utsler says the oil giant is continuing cleanup efforts. He says controlled burning was a huge success in getting oil out of the gulf.

"Controlled burning operations that allowed us to physically gather this oil on the water and burn it in place," said Utsler.

But LSU Professor Barry Dellinger, a physical chemist, says the burns caused more harm than good.

Dellinger says igniting the unique mixture of salt water and oil formed deadly toxins. He said he told EPA officials that before they started the burns.

"I said in the public meeting at the time that I thought dioxins would be formed in the incessant burnings and it should be monitored and measuring that," added Dellinger.

Burning oil on the surface of the gulf is a method that BP used many times.

"We did 411 controlled burns offshore, with the longest being 12 hours of continuous activity," said Utsler.

Dellinger says the workers involved in the burning are going to be the most exposed group. "But that soot, a lot of it's going to fall out in the ocean. So once it gets into the ocean it can be picked up by the ecosystem," he added.

Dellinger said then that there simply wasn't enough credible evidence one way or the other to support the burnings.

He begged the EPA to do a study, which he says the finally did over a month ago. He says the report is complete, but not yet available. He also says it won't be pretty.

"I would bet my bottom dollar that it's gonna be what I just said it's about and it's not gonna be good," added Dellinger.

9 News contacted the EPA Tuesday and was referred to their Oil Spill Public Relations Office and has not responded to inquiries.

  • Yea they burned oil in the gulf. Just think what would happen if we burned oil in our front yards we would go to prison with a huge fine. Where does the Law begin?I guess Laws are for the Middle class and Poor. What a shame. Now look at all the fish dying in the lousianna marshes and they say oh this could not be because of the oil spill. What a bunch of liars and cheats they are. All about money and depopulation. So sad. God Bless You for the courage to keep informing people on here.

  • @8167433 The USA has no laws that can be applied to the rich, just look at the wtc7 or the over $2 billion that went missing from the Pentagon while the dual citizenship holder Dov Zakheim was comptroller. Rumsfeld announced the day before 911 that the money was "missing" and cannot be accounted for, the next day 911 the evidence for this crime went missing in the Pentagon attack, how very convenient for the extremist zionist Dov Zakheim, the $ are probably safely in Israel right now

You know Ralph, these damn sheep just won't keep their nosey asses out of our business. They used to just go along with no problems.
