Instructional Film in English by Jon Welch & Son Nguyen recorded at the SLIDE FACTORY European Trombone Festival in Rotterdam, Holland in March 2009 (ca. 75 Minutes; Download Only). Available in the Online Store at www.jonwelchmusic.com.

In this film, Nils picks apart his "new style" Jazz improvisation on trombone and covers such topics as alternate positions, odd meters, special trombone effects and mutes, how to play fast and modern harmonic concepts for Jazz trombone. Also included are illustrative special concert performances by his band Root 70 and concert footage from the Slide Factory festival. Learn about the magic behind Nils Wogram's fabulous trombone playing first-hand and from the master himself!

Nils Wogram is one of the rising stars on the European Jazz trombone scene. As an accomplished player he is single-handedly pushing the jazz trombone envelope into new, uncharted territory and his commitment and pioneer attitude are reminiscent of the great saxophonist explorer John Coltrane, one of his major influences. In his improvisations, he pushes the trombone to new levels electing to do things decidedly differently while still paying respectful tribute the trombone tradition. After studying with Jimmy Knepper and Slide Hampton in New York in the early 90s, Nils embarked on a varied performing career in Europe and has released almost 20 CDs to date with his various projects. He is a major jazz trombone artist and worthy of much wider recognition. Make sure you check him out!

  • "New Style" ????? why'??? Alternate positions are used for many trombone players (classical players included) .Slide Hampton plays Giant Steps since the 60's(and then many others) ... Where is the "new trombone style"????

  • I beg to differ with you and you'll just have to buy the film to find out. Check out some of our other promotional films with Nils from the Slide Factory 2009 and you'll see what "New Style" we're talking about. Thanks for taking the time to comment anyway!

  • Um...Coltrane definetly based Giant Steps around the Augmented triad (B-G-Eb) not "E" . He said it not me at like 3:30-3:40.

  • GRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAATTTTT!!!

  • he's like a poster boy of trombone

  • Great Jazz Player, but nothing really new here. Willie Dennis was playing break neck speeds using alternate positions as far back as the early 50s, and Carl was doodling all the way back starting in 1956 when he first joined Kentons orchestra. Once again not putting him down , an amazing player who has a lot to bring to the table. But all of these techniques and jazz language have been used before at some point.

  • @WetFlugel

    I hope...i hope.....

  • @pedrosteve First of all, I don't play trombone. I'm a trumpet player and I can cut Coltrane changes in twelve keys just as good as anyone. You sound very upset that you can't play as good as Nils. My opinion is that plenty of people can benefit from this. While I don't necessarily think this concept is "new", but I challenge you to find a trombonist who has a NEW concept today. Fuck you too.

  • @WetFlugel i was talking about the technique not about the Coltrane's concepts, he's an incredible player but there's nothing "new" on his his playing( that's my oppinion!!)

anyway, If you find hard play Coltrane's changes on trombone maybe you are not a serious jazz player. Every jazz player should to study Coltrane's concepts.

My english is terrible but i can write very well: FUCK YOU!

  • @pedrosteve While it may not be 'new' conceptually, he uses the Coltrane matrix like trombone players haven't before. He also mentioned there are exceptions. You idiot.

  • @SeybertGuy I'm almost certain he didn't mean to say that...

  • lol thats my uncle^^

  • Skills Nilsy! Nice upload
