Watching this makes me realized how important culture and identity are to Africans compared to races in America, who have no complete idea of what their origin is except for that they are "white" or "black" or "Asian" or "Hispanic" Americans.
I hate that the US bases it's people on the color of their skin: white, black, asian or Hispanic only. it is so sad to know that. however, around other parts of the world, people base themselves on culture, language and identity. For example, anywhere else in the world, people are known for their cultural values and identity, instead of being classified as a whole race; white or black, it is rather known or identified by as German, French, Spaniard, Yemen, Thai, British, Ethiopian, Chinese, etc
this is the reason we, as AFRICANS need to define ourselves by our cultural identities its so important to keep your language, culture, it is YOUR PROPERTY .. you do not give away what belongs to you and when i do see africans who do it with impunity i feel sorry for them, because they have taken up the mantle that was set up to dehumanise and degrade the african slaves taken to the americas centuries ago and they continue to weld that weapon as a stick to still keep their descendants in line .
When ever Africans express a pride in whom they are they are immediately attacked and vilified by those who do not understand such things.. In a country that does not recognise "africa " as being a place of positive energy or good things, of course they are going to attack those they see coming from this place who refuse to be bogged down in a culture of negativity and self hatred . its not the way we, as a continent view things.. NORTH , SOUTH , EAST OR WEST.. we all have an invisible cord
on it that most do not comprehend or understand.. I was reading in an english paper the view's black commentator whining that there were "no black people " at the wedding of the Queen of Englands grandson yesterday , she started to whinge about a "rosa parks moment" which is ridiculous , in this country there is no "rosa parks moment " because the right to vote has been UNIVERSAL black people never had to fight for it .. we have our own battles here nothing to do with americans .. at all.
and regurtigate the racist slurs they learn from birth to attack us as its all they know of themselves its what they are taught to do by a society that really has no time for them anymore apart from ENTERTAINMENT .. this is a harsh analysis but its true that is why they cannot understand why africans who come to america just get on with it , do not complain and are not BITTER about themselves.. but again they forget that africans are in the usa BY CHOICE not by DEFAULT . This gives a spin
dumb down and simplify what they dont understand .. the FEW OF THEM THAT RECOGNISE that there is a shortfall in their knowledge of the outside world let alone complex african cultural set ups , know what they must do to rectify that lack of knowledge. however they must address their own issues instead of coming in to pronouse that they are going to "lead us" .. we are not the being lead by anyone but OURSELVES and this is true, of course again they come up with white america's attidutes
with what does not concern us. we have OUR OWN ISSUES AS A CONTINENT AND AS A VARIED PEOPLE WITHIN IT.. it has nothing to do with what goes on in the usa. am tired of the way they continue to insist that we are part of whatever they are going thru when we are not ... then again this inability to see beyond their own borders and refusal to recognise that AFRICA IS A CONTINENT NOT A COUNTRY and not the first episode of ROOTS.. is what brings on the attacks against us so vigorously and they
i dont even have to see this vid to know that its true.. our identity is not encapsulated in the ethos of african american cultural identity so the term "black people " for us , as africans is a misnomer we are not a general term we have our definitions which is based on land mass, cultural identity which is the way we DEFINE OURSELVES.. ~Therefore we cannot take on the identikit that has nothing do with with us , which again provokes them into attacking us because we refuse to be lumbered
i was think the same thing....i am somali, and if i met a brother from sudan or kenya, i wouldn't have the same identity because of they land they grown up in. even food dresses. i only hear from black-american say african-identitiy.
@akat042001 Through DNA testing last year I was finally able to learn I shared genetic markers with the Tuareg in Mali. Like a lot of black Americans (I was born in Europe, but stil black American) I did not have the luxury or opportunity to narrow my cultural heritage down to a tribe or country. And even with my new ancestral knowledge, I am centuries removed from knowing what it *really* means to live as a Tuareg. So my experience/identity is as a mixed black American (with African roots).
Sister, I don’t agree with your views on some of your previous videos but this is a good video. And very good question! Africa is such a vast continent with many different people who have various cultural beliefs. So what exactly can be the African identity!?
I like the way the video shows the different faces of Africa.
@MegaBlackunity Black people have not come to terms with slavery and what it means.Being enslaved means you were conquered whether you are white, asian or black. As a black man I have accepted this. I know that that happened in the past and I cannot change it. I however feel I am an equal to whites and other races and can compete with them. So my race, or blackness or AFricaness is not consuming my mind. It does however for most blacks.
African is a Latin word derived from Africus which is a Roman diety of the southwest wind. Romans initially named the small area that they conquered Africa which was located west of modern day Egypt. So Africa is just another "Black," a term imposed by those who conquered and dominated rather than a term of identity born out of the volition of those who identify with the term today.
