Episode #1. William Colton rides into a town one month after Appomatox. Inside, there is a young man, not much more than a boy, who is talking really tough. An old man fresh out of a prison camp is there as well. The old man, Ab Nichols, fought for the Confederacy, and is offended when the young drunk, Jody Merriman, desecrates the Confederate flag. That's when Colton gets involved. As he fights for this man's honor, he remembers back to the last day of the Civil War and another young man he came face-to-face with.

Lloyd Bridges as William Colton
Tony Bill as Jody Merriman
Whit Bissell as Ab Nichols
Joe Haworth as Sergeant
John Hoyt as Colonel
Lou Krugman as Bartender
Michael Mortensen as Young Confederate Boy
Gregg Palmer as Adjutant
Stephen Roberts as Doctor
James Sikking as Confederate Captain

  • Thanks for taking the time to post episodes of this wonderful series.

  • I wonder how Serling would feel to know that almost 15,000 people tuned in to see this without a scrap of advertising or promotion?

  • Man, when they had real musical scores for tv shows...

  • Originally telecast on September 18, 1965, and was Rod Serling's only TV western. He wrote about half of the episodes before "withdrawing" from the series, because CBS complained there wasn't enough "action" happening during his scripts, and that it was "too cerebral" {that is, more social consicous than most westerns}, and Rod ended up bitterly disappointed about the whole thing. The ratings finished the series [opposite NBC's "SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES" and ABC's "HOLLYWOOD PALACE"].

  • Bless you for posting this and other episodes of "The Loner." It's absolutely ridiculous that it isn't available on DVD. It should have lasted more than one season.

  • Lloyd Bridges was always a favorite of mine.

  • Thank you for this Serling episode ... enjoyed it lots ... :)

  • THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN !
