BIG CATS: Conservation, Education, Exploitation?

Far too many exotic big cats are in private hands where they offer nothing for the conservation of the wild species. These "pets" are often exhibited in public as an educational tool for conservation. These cats are exploited for photo ops when they are cubs and discarded to horrible unaccredited "sanctuaries" or roadside zoos when they are adults. The real way to save these great cats is to preserve habitat.
Please don't throw your money away into an exotic pet trade that does nothing for the survival of the species.

*All of the captive footage was taken in Jan-Feb 2007, 60 miles or less from our own gates. One facility is finally now being cited by wildlife authorites. And some of it was filmed at the Florida State Fair's FWC exhibit were people watched the pacing animals (borrowed from a local pet owner) in their tiny exhibit cages. No one spoke to the children about conservation, and nothing was learned. Haven't we grown tired of seeing animals living in these conditions?

I wish all the abandoned big cats would go to BCR.

We wish we had the room and money to do this, but then people could still go out and buy more. We need to get to the root of the problem which is to get the laws changed regarding ownership of these cats. CatLaws*com

I WOULD NEVER keep a big cat or hold a big cat or come in contact with a big cat or kill a big cat or go to vegas (its preety near me to) and watch a big cat show...........and so on and so forth

EvansFan4ever, if fewer and fewer people go to those shows then the performers will make less and less money and will soon stop making wild animals perform like that. Have you read the story about Shequille the black leopard and what happened to him during his "training" to be a performing cat? If people realized what the animals go through maybe they wouldn't pay to watch those shows.

Conservation of a species has nothing to do with keeping the animal in captivity for US to "see" They are not meant to be kept by humans and the only reason these rescues need to exist is because people insist on using these animals in ways that make it IMPOSSIBLE to return them to the wild. ANY efforts to preserve these animals need to focus on preserving habitat so that the remaining animals in the wild CAN have a place to thrive .

I totally agree it is abusive and these animals are kept because the human is selfish,its all about what they want not what is best for the big cats.

If its not for those reasons its greed, money and expolitation.

Thank God for BCR! re educating the public is a must.

In Florida? Gee, I could've sworn that it was "More tigers in TEXAS"...Could you maybe cite some reputable documents regarding this phenomenon? And no, HSUS "SAEV DA BUNNEHS" does not count as "reputable". I'd like a US Gov't or a non-objective 3rd party analysis.
