Supporters of defeated reformist candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi held a rally in Tehran's Azadi (Freedom) Square early today an hour after a demonstration called by the regime in support of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
They turned out despite being urged not to by Mr Mousavi in a bid to avoid any violence.
"This headquarters calls on people to avoid the trap of planned clashes," a Mousavi spokesman said.
Supporters of Mr Mousavi and Mr Ahmadinejad have been rallying in Tehran, swept up in the biggest outpouring of public anger since the 1979 Islamic revolution.
In an apparent move to quell the unrest, the Guardians Council election watchdog said it was prepared for a recount if irregularities were found in Friday's election, which gave Mr Ahmadinejad a suspiciously large win over Mr Mousavi.
The regime announced tough restrictions on foreign media, requiring journalists to obtain explicit permission before covering any story. Journalists have also been banned from attending or reporting on any unauthorised demonstration.
On June 29, 2008, Seymour Hersh reported in the New Yorker: "Late last year, Congress agreed to a request from President Bush to fund a major escalation of covert operations against Iran, according to current and former military, intelligence, and congressional sources. These operations, for which the President sought up to four hundred million dollars, were described in a Presidential Finding signed by Bush, and are designed to destabilize the countrys religious leadership."
