NORTH BELLPORT — A crime-fighting tool that allows police to pinpoint shootings will be in place by the end of next month. Brookhaven officials hope the ShotSpotter will reduce crime in an area that has been plagued by gang activity. The technology is a sensor that locates the sound of gunshots and transmits that information to police. Wyandanch, North Amityville, Brentwood and Huntington Station already use the technology. It will cost Suffolk taxpayers $1.5 million to cover operating costs for all five areas.
