Why not improve the quality of the blood with artificial augmentation such as oxygenated fluorocarbons provided by microfluidic nanofactories implanted to convert the fluoride ingested in drinking water. You could also genetically upgrade the red cells to increase carrying capacity. Just small things to increase capacity without any massive redesign. Or you could just grow an auxillary brain in a symbiotic medium... maybe small neural nodes along the spinal column so its a line of brains ^_^

You are quite correct - and that is before we introduce enhancing drugs too, but it all turns out to be marginal increases and no contest for the Moore's Law acceleration of our machines.
Since this presentation I have completed much more research work and so have many others and the discoveries are startling!
Thanks for the observations, Peter

machines have potential to be super smart. Humans have emotions and thoughts to distract them. But a machine will only focus on the task or mission at hand. Just thought i'de put a random thought in.

That may have been true of old machines, but not anymore!
Progress never sleeps!
