It is a fantastic SOUND inspite of the limitations of the recording. What a virtuosic instrument the LPO must have been in the1930s under its principal conductor .... perhaps only the NBC orchestra under Toscanini was in the same leagu . Does anyone recognise any of the players shown?

Deeply impressed! I am charmed by his talk and conducting.

This is a wonderful example of the talent of Sir Thomas Beecham - a rehearsal of the finale to Tchaikovsky's second symphony in Queen's Hall. He was the orchestra's music director from 1932 to 1939. At the onset of World War II, as he said, "I was informed there was an emergency, so I emerged." He left Britain until 1944 and then he founded another great orchestra - the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Makes me wish I could have heard the LPO live in the 1930's under their founder.

Actually it's the finale, the 5th movement "Polonaise".
-
yes, 4th movement of Polish Symphony

transforming - I think a better word would be "sardonic". Don't you find a touch of that in his implication that other orchestras are merely older and so better known, not actually superior?

It sounds like Tchaikovsky but I sure can't place it. 3rd symphony maybe?
Great to be able to see/hear him as a relatively young man without the sarcasm evident in his later interviews.
