England and Manchester City boss Sven Goran Eriksson is set to be appointed director of football at Notts County on Wednesday.
The Swede has been out of work since being sacked as Mexico chief in March following an unsuccessful 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.
But Eriksson - who has also managed the likes of Lazio, Sampdoria and Benfica - is now set to make a shock return to English football.
County only narrowly avoided relegation from League Two last season, but Munto Finance Ltd recently completed a takeover of the club and the ambitious new owners are keen to climb the Football League.
It is reported that Ian McParland will remain as manager and that, in a major statement of intent, Eriksson will be appointed in a senior role.
The 61-year-old was thought to be considered a candidate to replace Portsmouth boss Paul Hart, while he has also been linked with the Swedish national team, but he now looks ready for a sensational move to County.
Eriksson is expected to be unveiled at County in an official press conference at Meadow Lane on Wednesday morning.
