Firefighters in Southern California are battling more than a dozen wildfires that have destroyed 16,000 hectares of land and forced the evacuation of more than 250,000 people from their homes in the area.
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who declared a state of emergency late Sunday in seven counties where fires have killed one person and injured dozens, said Monday that "it's a tragic time for California."
At a news conference in Malibu, he said that only 10 per cent of the fires have been contained, but that authorities at all government levels are co-operating to get them under control.
Some fertile grounds for investigative reporting. Why is our Nation unprepared time and time again for anticipated wildfires? Much of the destruction was avoidable. Why were Navy, Marine and CA NG helicopters unable to get clearances to fly early on? What about the NG's C-130 cargo planes that were supposed to be outfitted with tanks to carry retardant? Demand answers, please.
