78 record transferred by TechnerVideo from a white-label radio station copy 78 using Columbia's 1949 equalization curve settings. The April 13, 1949 recording at Columbia's 30th Street studio in NYC.

Video: The band rehearsing this cut at the Local 77 Musician Union's hall at 18th and Arch Sts. on April 12, 1949 in Philadelphia. From a 8 x 10" glossy print. Transferred to video and edited by TechnerVideo.

Highlights: Bandleader Elliot Lawrence and arranger Gerry Mulligan watching the band; Columbia execs sitting on bench in background.

Personnel: Top Row (L to R): Trumpets: Bill Danziesen, Jimmy Padgett, Johnny Dee, JOE TECHNER; Bass. Tom O'Neill. This recording was voted one of the top 50 jazz recordings of the 20th Century by The Smithsonian Institute.

  • One of my classmates in college was Joe Soldo's grandson, John Soldo. Also, would you mind fixing the spelling of saxophone?

  • I'd love to get some more of this. My father is the saxophonist with the black glasses. He played with Elliot Lawrence for many years.
