I can not imagine how their parents must have felt as they ate the food your children sell themselves for. It makes one wonder about dignity as a father and going criminially active.There were little children forced to stand outside hotels to proposition men as they left in the mornings. The first day I was there I noticed that there are no overweight people. I met looked in the eyes and extensivly questioned men who were involved in what was called the Salvador option (what they call secterian violence in Iraq) RIGHT NOW Canada is at a crossroads in Afghanistan. The Benchmark has 2 options. either every able man woman and child in Canada learns the problems, the real history and gives a dollar a week or more and adopts the Afghan people as family . Nato must stay in charge. ( Or we waste our time) You must believe that Canada helped push out the Soviet army in the 80s yet left the people hanging out to dry with the USA. These are just a few of the things that Canada must do as we all did in WW2. How many Taliban come back next spring is secondary. Right now on the ground Canada has months not years to fix going in liberating Kabul and giving us the chance of a lifetime (much less the debt Canada owes Afghanistan) but the press and the USA going to Iraq and once again leaving the people to suffer is about to make all we have done for nothing.. It is one thing to go look at the guts and gore yet be one of those people who say it was OK because I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. You Need to Know how we got to where we are, and what everyone of us can do. It is simple but it is Canadas most important action since WW2. I never forgave myself for not helping that one man on the side of the road and am also haunted evey day by a 16 year old girl that begged me for 6 dollars . I wanted her to wait till I could get change for $20 to give her $10 as she broke my heart. When I got back 5 minutes later she was gone. Beware Canada everything is in Afghanistan It could be the first real win situation just like the difference that not taking part in the contra wars means as to how people see Canadians today in Latin America. You OWE Afghanistan you just do not know it yet and what it will cost if we do not try. If we are just going to shoot the place up it would be better to cut and run... two problems with the poppy buying theory. (they don't completely ruin it, but they do expose it not the be the great eureka that some people would make it seem)
1. Supply and demand. The cost of a poppy now is not what we will pay if we start buying them. If we buy them then the demand on the illegal side goes up and so does the price, enter a bidding war with terrorists.
2. Coercion, the taliban will threaten and bully the farmer into selling them their opium.

For once I read some very good intelligent comments in the video and by the postings of viewers.
The problems we have could be solved if we really wanted to take the time to think. Think. Who is the real force behind all our troubles. Who indeed. The list is so long I can't even begin, but the root cause is down to one simple statement made a long long time ago. Here it is. "God, If you don't make me a God like you, I will destroy your beautiful creation". Do I really have to name the speaker?

We could definatly process and sell that crop faster than they can grow it. Think how prosperous Canada could be?! Even without exporting, we would probably be one of the richest nations in the world in a very short time.

Goddamn, if that isn't the smartest thing I've heard in a long time - genuis is saying first what everyone else will then say is obvious. The amount of money need to buy the WHOLE of the Afghan poppy production is VERY SMALL compared to the financial cost of fighting that plant's pernicious derivatives. I AGREE 100% on that BLACKGUARD JOHN WALTERS of the U.S. DEA. That bastard was up here in Vancouver railing against our 'safe injection site' which has proved so successful in preventing HIV transmission!!
In Afghanistan we should BUY the poppy crop if we want the peasant's co-operation!! Unless we do the war will continue into the far future and our Canadian troops will be driven out as infidel invaders!
