My Z80 microcontroller -- it talks! The full message is "HELLO EVERYBODY HEX NUMBERS 0123456789ABCDEF ALPHABET ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ". I know, some of the letters really suck... limitations of a 7 segment display.

  • The Zed80 (not Zee80) is a microprocessor, not a microcontroller!!

  • you can make the later versions actually talk.

You can do this with a voice chip or stored voice.

  • The Z-80 is actually fast enough to "multiplex" seven segment displays. It's fairly easy to build a Z-80 machine with hexadecimal input and a hex readout for programming development and you probably only need a few chips more (PIO's, and a CTC) for a truly useful device. The Z-80 still is an incredible family of microchips.

  • @ChoroQQQQQ you need to start with basic digital electronics and work your way up to microprocessors. Doing some digital electronics kits gets you the basic understanding of logic that you need to advance to binary math, bus systems, clocks and various techniques that all come together in a microprocessor system.

  • I've always wondered how the hell anybody goes about learning stuff like this. All I've ever wanted was to learn how to do stuff like this, but I have no idea where to start. I know nothing, the internet is full of high-level and confusing information, not the least of which is hands-on, and I mean.... people like you had to start somewhere, right? Right?!

Have you just ALWAYS known how to do stuff like this? I'm so damn discouraged with life, seeing stuff like this. >_>

  • Nixies have become rare, collectable and expensive! A 16 LED high matrix wouldn't be such a rare part and would scroll nice.

  • I might have a few more 7seg x8 muxed vfd goodness if you want.. and some 50v buffery deals ;)

  • I have a pair of union jack nixies (15seg or something around there?) They would be totally suitable for this.

  • You need some Nixies!
