Dont know why you let your cowboy mate try and start it in the water? Not only it would have had water in the engine the engine breather was fully underwater too. Bent internals are not uncommon with water damage when not drained out properly.

should of taken the spark plug out then kicked it over til it was dry, spark plug back in and away you go. NEVER compress water in the engine u will ruin it!
