Very clear concise and inspiring guide. I was actually looking for something on "proggy mats" (come from NE originally but am now in USA). It was a happy accident to find this video I've done some American style rug hooking in past so I am going to find my fabrics and hooks and look up Heather's site.

Thank you so much, can I use cotton fabric?

@MsPittston Thanks for your question: the answer depends on what you'll do with your rug! Good woven wool is always best because it is so resitant to wear. Knitted cottons (like t-shirts) can produce good results. My Rug Aid students in The Gambia, who mostly have visual impairments, use locally-printed woven cotton fabrics to produce really colourful rugs. Woven cotton is fine for wall hangings but it quickly gets flattened in floor rugs, so use it wisely and you should get some lovely results.
