Recalling the time when Mel Gibson, actor and movie star, was arrested and charged with drunk driving - and gave some very unpleasant anti-Semitic abuse at the time by all accounts.

Funky bruiser, we`d love to have him back in Melbourne. I`m sure most Aussies would welcome him too because he`s a legendary actor. Who cares what his personal beliefs are. That`s his business. We like him because he appears in great films.

@ManFromMelbourne Well some people do care because of the incidence of the actor's personal views (when drunk or when sober) being supported by fans of his films.

As you point out, there is no logical connection between his films and his personal views but politics is also about the behaviour of illogical people.

In political leadership, you need to factor in illogical film fans taking seriously the actor's personal views. Hence it is good if Gibson is embarrassed into apologising.

If you or I had made anti-semitic or racist comments while being arrested, the police would not have told the public about it, or the press. People say terrible things when they're drunk, and I don't see how Gibson's fame gives the police the right to publicise his comments.

It's bullshit. He's a movie star, not a world leader, so it's none of our fucking business what he says when drunk. He's just a guy.

He apologized! He was drunk! If Mel says something like that while drunk, it should not be taken so far out of proportion.

Ok. Doing shit like the Nazis did is clearly wrong. What Mel said is a drunk opinion. And there are a lot of Jews in Hollywood that trashed Mel's own masterpiece, Passion of the Christ for telling that story the way he did. And, it was a great film.

I noticed in the video that one of the men interviewed said there should be consequences in this country for bigotry. Last I checked we live in a FREE society to think and feel what we want. Love it or hate it that is what this country is founded on so don't go telling me who I can and cannot like. Same goes for Mel. He can think what he wants whether any of us agree with him or not. As long as he doesnt physically hurt anyone for those beliefs he is free to feel that way.
