United Nations, New York, May 2009 - Palm oil production has risen sharply in Peru over the past decades. For many farmers in the region, growing palm is an important alternative to the often illegal cultivation of coca. A UN programme is helping them make the switch to sustainable crops.

Palm is not part of our diversity (Peruvian) ... this is a very profitable alternative in order to supply the cosmetic and oil industry.. but is not sustainable at all. In Colombia the first producer in South America, ambition has become depredation and a lot of native farmers has been displaced, agriculture biodiversity changed.. in order to satisfied the international industries...
