Hey guys/gals :). Hope you don't mind the long description...it's just my way of being "personal" and sharing a bit of "whatever" while I was working on the song.
Figured I'd go with the Aenima version of this song as apposed to the Salival version. Wow, this song is long and it's also a pedal tap-dance; added "in-video" notes to help with most of the pedal timing. Of course, I don't know exactly what Adam has done...this is just the way I played it with the gear I have. Seems pedal timing changes from one version of the song to the next, but this arrangement seemed to work best for this version of the song. Also, I use a Boss LS-2 Line Selector to turn multiple pedals on/off...pretty much the same as the PSM-5 Master Switch that Adam uses, just newer.
Like my last few videos, my guitar is way out front and louder than the background music to easily distinguish the guitar work. Few live bits added here and there. And a few errors of course with some parts that could have been tighter. Could have kept at it and tried for a better take, but this song is so long and there are so many parts that turn out differently every time you play them. Chances are that in trying to get some parts better, I'd get other parts worse.
Case in point is the solo. A few weeks ago, I put up a "teaser" that actually had a better solo...

At around 6:06, if you listen carefully, you can hear my dog, Hank the Basset Hound, barking. This is my favorite...when I'm trying to record, lol. It's really hard to make out...I think because he's in time with the music. Anyway, it's not too distracting so I left it in to immortalize him :).
I've watched this recording a few times and debated on uploading it for a few days. It's been weeks and weeks since my last upload and I know some people are anxious for a new song, so I don't want to take forever. I'm also a bit tired of practicing/playing it and really want to move on before I burn myself out on this altogether. However, I also don't want to put up something that's not that great as I know this song will be a popular upload....it's many people's favorite. I hope that you'll like it, find it useful, and that you'll not be too critical of the few areas that could have been better.
I consider this song to be one of the hardest to play exactly like Adam. And, of course, it's one of the longest. And so, I knew it was going to take a while longer to get this song uploaded. However, I've also had some personal issues that have kept me from playing as much as I'd like, and this has added to the time needed to get this song down. I'd like to take this time to dedicate this song to my Father. Even though it's not his type of music and the song has nothing to do with him, he's been on my mind while I've been working on it. I'd also like to dedicate this song to myself...I quit smoking! Been six weeks now and I think I've got it. Been smoking on and off for over 25 years. Really bad for your health; and so, being that I just recently turned 40 (yuck), I thought it high time to quit. I don't want to smoke anymore, so I'm just not going to do it :).
Of course, this song and all rights belong to Tool. Adam came up with the guitar parts for this masterpiece and it's all I can do just to copy it....hat's off to you, Adam Jones :).

sweet video man. I actually liked the solo in this one better than the preview. I've got two questions though that you might be able to answer:
1. at the very last part (at 12:30 in your video), I can never make out those notes, nor the exact rhythm. I kinda play a mesh of triplets on D and A... how do you play that part?
2. do you know anything about the background solo during the recorded version? is it just tremolo? it seems really fast, but I can't tell if it's following the time sig
