Sorry about the quality of the video; it was taken on a mobile phone.

This is Singapores East Coast Park showing waves coming across the top of the beach on 14th January 2009. The water had flowed through the drainage system and had filled up the drains on the side of the ECP side road.

Could this be the effect of global warming and rising water levels.?

What if it were another 50 cms higher; perhaps Marine parade might be flooded. We are hearing scientists postulate that a chain reaction might cause sea level to rise faster than expected

Who is thinking about this and should we not be doing something about this now rather than later.

How about starting to plan and build sea defenses now? It took the Netherlands 25 years to build their coastal defenses. This might include:

Coastal embankments

Compartmentalizing Singapore into flood zones to limit flooding if coastal defenses are breached by say a disaster like a Tsunami.

Distributed power systems and for water solar panels on the roofs or as part of buildings.

Locks on the major rivers to prevent back flow on very high tides

Special sewage handling requirements.

Possibly moving power stations to high ground

Creating relevant degrees at university

The current financial crisis means we have the people resources to think about doing this.

By mitigating the risk of flood, will Singapore not be a potentially safer place to do business as a global financial centre?

If it is done now rather at time of crisis, it will mean that there will be less competition for the same materials that the rest of the world will need at that time.

It may develop an expertise that may be financially rewarding later.

  • Action now being taken

SINGAPORE - A 15-km (10 mile) stretch of crisp white beach is one of the key battlegrounds in Singapore's campaign to defend its hard-won territory against rising sea levels linked to climate change.

Stone breakwaters are being enlarged on the low-lying island state's man-made east coast and their heights raised. Barges carrying imported sand top up the beach, which is regularly breached by high tides.

  • This means singapore will drown one day... hmmmm

  • @saberi81

I saw this over a year ago and could not believe my eyes.

Maybe the flooding that is happening now is not so much because of poor planning by PUB than because the overall water levels are rising in ways we are not monitoring.

I think we need to look at coastal defenses now rather than later

  • No amount of prevented measures by the government can hold back the wrath and fury of nature and if this water level comes up like this, it's an act of nature and so be it!

No point shifting blame, we just act on the situation.

    That's it, period!

  • ur going down.....10 feet under sea water......be prepared....

  • of all the land refills and whatnots...the water still comes...keep digging singapore.lol

  • @saberi81 The recent floods have nothing to do with tides - all three eps occurred during low or receding tide. And MB should have protected us from tides anyway. So, it's inadequate planning by PUB plain and simple.

What's in the video happens one or two days each year, around Chinese New Year during which I believe the moon is closest to the earth (hence exerting its gravity on our seas). And every few years - I don't know the cycle - these tides are even higher than the usual high.

  • @saberi81 yes for sure.

  • the june'10 and july'10 orchard flood is poor planning indeed. the gov has stated clearly that Orchard is 3-4 metres above sea level. Some other places flooded because they are at low-lying areas. How to do something for this Earth? Have less babies and thus less consumption of the natural resources. I believe you have the other answers "How to save our planet?"

  • @arnoldkhoo maybe its not about poor planning by PUB. maybe all of us need to wake up and realise , its the global warming. do something to save the earth.
