JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS (Cole Porter) (from 'Jazz Folios' (2000) "ROGIER RUBENS - singer, songwriter and composer from from Holland - was only 5 years old when he became fascinated by singers like Rosemary Clooney, Ella Fitzgerald and Rita Reys to name a few. And he managed to pursuade his dad, who was a jazz-pianist, to purchase a lot of their recordings. The songs that were actually meant to hit a mature audience struck him even at such a young age. Rogier: "When my dad was playing the piano, or when I sang along with those recordings the words and lyrics hardly meant anything to me, then. But I did realise that they were love-songs, and when some lines or verses were meant to be funny I heard that right away. Miss Clooney had a really big influence on me. She wasn't just 'another' singer who sang a song, she was an artist who could put words and lyrics into a 'story', and children can associate immediately with that. You can't fool kids, like Clooney once said herself. And a newspaper once said '..If the Statue of Liberty could sing it would probably sound like Rosemary Clooney'.
I think I learned from Clooney. First of all, you have to understand a song before you sing it and you've got to live the composer's intentions. Because the audience has to understand every word, you must articulate well and emphasize at the right moment."

Mezmerizing--I never tire of watching
phonograph records play--
especially 45s.
This is a rare one, surely European,
and Really Really Neat.
Love the song, and loved this version,
and loved the video prelude and the
'afterward'. Thanks--I'll be back!
