  • This is THE best version. Cusack and Jayston were superb.

  • @mendoncacorreia

Your grasp on the characters pleases me to no end. The 1973 and 1983 versions are favorites of mine, each for their integrity of the characters and the contrasting light each set of actors had for the characters. Though I imagined Jane a bit more quietly amused (such as I felt Clarke did), I think Sorcha is right on the mark with her delivery of wit.

  • the DEFINITIVE interpretation -- Jayston and Cusack are the best!!

  • you call this passion

    i call it a sin

  • Thanks so much for posting this - I´ve just seen a little bit and was dying to see more! I really liked Michael Jayston...

  • @Maisha2006 - There lies a great charm of the novel... and, of course, of this, the 1973 BBC TV adaptation of it. To be completely fair with you, I should mention that I'm one of the vast legion of fans who saw it back in the 1970s and waited 30 looong years (!!!) for its release in the market. Believe it or not, I ordered it without even taking notice of its (very high) price!...

  • @Maisha2006 - Now, Rochester. He's not Byronic: the first time we see him, he looks romantic, virile, riding a horse; but he falls (ch. 12)! He's just a near middle-aged man, unable to get a divorce from an unfit wife, with an out-of-the-wedlock child born from one of his affairs, who falls in-love with one of his employees.

Jane and Rochester are ordinary characters living an extraordinary situation: that's why we admire AND identify ourselves with them. There lies a great charm of the novel.

  • @Maisha2006 @Maisha2006 - I guess this now widespread idea about Jane is due to an innacurate understanding of Brocklehurst and Rochester.

First, Brocklehurst. He's not a mindshaping evil man: he's just pompous and meddling (ch. 13). He visits Lowood only once after Jane's arrival (ch. 7). he doesn't see that the pupils' inside is beyond his interference (ch. 8). He never returns there during the typhus fever (ch. 9) and ends up discharged by men of more enlarged and sympathising minds (ibid.).

  • @Maisha2006 - I see what you mean; but I honestly don't think the 2006 (and 2011) version(s) dealt with it better. Remember chapter XII of the novel, when Jane gives her help to Mr. Rochester in Hay Lane?

"I felt NO FEAR of him, and BUT LITTLE SHYNESS. Had he been a handsome, heroic-looking young gentleman, I should not have dared to stand thus [...]

"[...] the frown, the roughness of the traveller, set me at MY EASE [...]"

Check "Jαηє Eуяє 1973 E2 P1/5" in this same channel.

  • @mendoncacorreia I think the actress's delivery is not my idea of what Jane should be. Jane is a little more morose, reserves, clear, smiles when she wins her little battles with Rochester, but not quite as sparkling. I liked her in the latter part of the movie though. I think she just warms up to Rochester with too much contained excitement at the beginning. I though they dealt with it better in the 2006 and 2011 versions. But that is just my opinion.
