One of their "shaped note" songs, this was performed on 1-27-08 at New Town Baptist Church in Calhoun, GA. Greater Vision members are Gerald Wolfe, Rodney Griffin and Jason Waldroup.

Those who do not understand and appreciate the shape notes are lacking in music basics. It's too bad that they miss the point, that it takes talent and knowledge to sing these songs. They don't just do it by the "seat of their pants" as some seem to
think, rather there is method applied, and the job is WELL DONE, thanks Greater Vision.

I thank God for the groups still singing the shape-notes! Really made my day to hear them sung.

The jibberish is not jibberish at all. If you look at the notes in the hymnal, they have different shapes, that correspond to a certain pitch. This is how people learned the songs. In the early 20th century when this style of music was becoming popular they would often form quartets of random people that had never sang together. Often they didn't know the songs, and they would run through it one time using the shape notes, then add the lyrics on subsequent rounds. Quite brilliant, actually.

@DinanaSN I really enjoyed it..."jibberish" and all. And they just did this in a concert we attended a couple of months ago. It actually takes talent! :)

This "jibberish" is a foundational, fundamental part of learning to properly sing and read music. All singing schools in the early days started all students out learning the shape notes. Once you learn the shape notes, then you add words. You can sing any song written in shape notes once you learn the shape.
Greater Vision is one of the best groups out there. If they are using the hymnal, then they need the hymnal. Especially singing the shapes because each part has a different shape. Great job

Thank you so much DinanaSN for posting this! It made my day! I guess some folks don't realize that this "jibberish" called shaped note singing is the very FOUNDATION of what is now known as traditional Southern Gospel. I've been singing and playing it for 45 years now, and I LOVE it and never get tired of it. Thanks for sharing this; I love Gerald's piano work. Bless you for the vids you have out here. Yes, I am calling the d-rei-mi jibberish. I thought I was going to find a good video of group singing this song. Our choir sang it when I was growing up. Very disappointing and the waste of good music time.

You're entitled to your opinion. Greater Vision used to always do one song on their program with one shape note verse. I haven't seen them do that for a while now and don't know if they plan to have it in their program again. Too bad you weren't able to enjoy it as the little change of pace that it was intended to be.

They had me till they messed the song with that jibborish.

If you're calling the do-re-mi as jibberish, you should know that there are lots of us that like it!! It's just fun.
