After 5 years in the works, on Sept. 30, 2009, the first ever legislative Bill for a Department of Peace in the Canadian Parliament was tabled as a Private Members Bill.
This Bill advocates through the creation of a Civilian Peace Service a specialized cadre of peace professionals, trained in prevention, mediation, and conflict resolution.
Additional elements of the Bill seek within this Department a special profile on important issues such as Nuclear Disarmament, Human Rights, Peace Education and Prevention of Violence in Canada.
This is also a part of the world wide movement of Departments for Peace, with representation in 40 countries. And three of those countries, Costa Rica, Nepal and the Solomon Islands have already implement Ministries for Peace within their governments.
The founders of this Canadian Private Members Bill see it as an important initiative that will revitalize Canadas role as a global peacebuilder.
