Just 720p test on my new JVC HD camera. The footage is RAW and unedited, and its blurry at the beginning because i was playing round with focus. Remember to watch out and expect more videos!
for a consumer HD cam its great!! Not sure about yours (uses single CMOS) but my GZ-HD6 (uses 3 CCDs) captures a real nice image for its price, I'll upload a response to show ya :-)
i get that aswell, when i look closely at the video its effing grainy. When i walk around with the camera is on AUTO, the footage looks dull and fuzzy. it looks high quality, but not HD. Mabey the camera isnt that great after all.
Oh, yeah, I always go full manual (unless I'm walking around and have no time for it), but I always find that there is noise and grain in the video... unless I have a subject and focus on getting DOF. Other than that, if it's a flat kind of thing, it's just ugly...
I have a GZ-HD6. It's good to use Manual Mode not Auto, with a little knowledge its easy too, like White Balance- You can set your white balance manually by holding a piece of white paper in front of the lense and holding MWB in the white balance settings untill it stops flashing, and also, you can set the shutter and aperture. Its important for the picture to not be too bright or colors turn out dull, or too dark etc. Thats afew things you can do just on the camera itself. have fun

I have a GZ-HD30 (Exact same camcorder; but with a 80gb hard drive) and my video comes out so... not like yours lol... tell me your secrets! haha.
But seriously. Whether it's RAW or not, it's ugly compared to this!
