You couldn't be more correct. At the end of the performance, The Police hand over their instruments to U2 as a way of saying, "Our time is over with now, it is your turn to be the kings or rock." I know that may sound egotistical but it is the truth. The transfer of power took place on that stage. A seminal gig.

The handing over of the bass from Sting to Adam Clayton was not some "transfer of power" or anything else symbolic. When this Amnesty tour started Sting was on the bill as a solo artist and played with his band. The Police only played the last three shows. Sting played guitar with the "Blue Turtles" band. He was borrowing Adam Clayton's bass because for the tour he had brought guitars, not basses. U2 was the headliner on the tour until The Police played as a unit.
