Thank you, John Chancellor...all these years and I've been calling it the Smithsonian Institute...Mr. Chancellor informed me in this clip that it is CORRECTLY called the SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION.
It only proves that a person is never too old to learn, if he only keeps his mind open and receptive.

This clip obviously came from the Vanderbilt TV News Archive in Nashville, Tennessee. Vanderbilt began recording the Big Three network newscasts in 1968 after discovering that the newscasts weren't being saved (at least back then). Vanderbilt was using half-inch industrial grade videotape recorders, and didn't start recording in color until around 1978.

@rayjr6 watergate had happend a few weeks before... but, of course the scandal was not in the open, esp because of the coverup that was happening ... the US was in trouble by the late Carter administration.. than a long run of a good economy, but which turned out to be rotten underneath due the corruption of Washington and Guici gulch.... and there has been a decline in the culture , esp over the last decade..

@MikeChuk21 What I want to know is how roberthickerson thinks if the Soviet Union collapsed four years sooner, his life would be better.

Too bad this is not in color.

The Vanderbilt Television News Archive is WONDERFUL! The Archive began recording in color on Tuesday, May 1, 1979.

The theme music accompanying the rolling credits is perfect for the Snoopy Dance!

@SesameSquirrel ok I got it. Thanks!
What was so amazing about this clip find was that it was discovered by me accidentally as part of a clip used on another documentary. I'll bet if someone has access to the Vanderbilt collection, there is every chance an even longer sample of the theme could be found. Someone probably has a reel-to-reel tape of this theme somewhere....
