The Mount Hospital in Bishopstoke, Hampshire closed a few years back in a clamour of local annoyance following years of campaigning to keep it open. It was a popular smaller hospital which mostly focused on rehabilitation for elderly patients but had various other outpatients' departments.

The history of the site is interesting too. It started as smallish private estate with the first house built by a wealthy farmer in 1844. It was later bought by a Captain Hargreaves in the 1870s. When he died it was bought by a Mr Cotton who rebuilt it in 1893. His imposing Victorian mansion replete with impressive tower forms the heart of the site. It originally had impressive gardens too suitable for a house of its standing with an arboretum, formal gardens and a Victorian water garden. In 1927 it was sold to Hampshire County Council who converted it into a hospital reusing the original Victorian house, as well as building a range of other buildings including another impressive art deco-ish ward building. It was only when I saw the front of that other ward building that its purpose screamed out at me ... massive opening windows are immediate tell tales of a TB sanatorium and I've since confirmed that this was the original purpose.

Disappointingly after signs of the site having been well secured for a while, when I was visited it wasn't secure at all, and worse the main mansion was soaking wet. It was only when I got up above the main roof that I saw why ... no slates left intact on the principally flat roof!

  • Went there last night, but didn't get inside. I heard that the reason it shut down was because the patients started to kill people? im not sure whether that was a rumour, but do you know why it actually closed down?

  • @missmaddy36 Haha ... patients started to kill people! It was closed because the usual reason ... an old small hospital costing too much money. It took them several years to come to a decision, with the usual protests from people who found it a useful hospital.

  • whats the first song called

  • It's called "In The House - In A Heartbeat" from the 28 Days Later sound track.

  • wow this place still looks pretty intact, but some of these places are falling apart and one day someones gonna break their neck falling through the floor

  • This place should be more intact than it actually is, since the main building is locally listed and supposed to be retained as part of the planning conditions for developing the rest of the site. However, conveniently it's getting ravaged, and then bet you somebody claims it's beyond saving = much easier demolition and a ton of new boxes!

  • I've Been up there about 2 weeks ago now with me and 4 other people, we went up there with a camera and a light we went from the watch tower bit in to the small white building all the way through to out the back where you show that landing after you've been in the church, i will admit it was rather scary and a very good experiance aswell. Whilst walking though the begging i looked on the floor and noticed a Biohazard note that had been filled out with a persons details -

  • my god the last time i went here was about a year ago and i got so freaked out, swear to god there was a electric bath with loads of read liquid in it...(blood?) the main old building was secure with metal sheets so couldn't get in but looked like some people tryed, kept hearing a groaning noise around in the bushes at night.... then 2 sheep dogs came round the corner which chased me and my 2 mates then someone who looked like a farmer locked himself in a building there...that place is fucked up
