The Matson container terminal is one of two at the Port of Long Beach that operates on a "green lease," an agreement between the terminal operator and the Port to eqip and operate the facility in an environmentally friendly manner. For example a $7 million shore power installation will allow ships to shut down diesel engines and plug into clean electrical power while at berth.
The funny thing is the founders of the company is my ancestors who chose to go west instead of stay east. heh geuss the west ones did better

At one time before 1997, a ship could legally toss their garbage out at sea (no plastics of course)
We used to always see a albatross following the ship..eating up the scraps, for the entire 5 day voyage to Honolulu.Nowadays they put all garbage in a container.
