747 Newark Landing

Landing of Boeing 747-200 at Newark, NJ. This was N713 CK, a Boeing 747-200 aircraft originally ordered by China Air. I was sitting in a hotel room at the famous "5 towns hotel" just outside of JFK when the company called. They wanted me to ferry an airplane from JFK to Newark.

OK...I can do that. We took off from JFK, and then did a big tour of northern New Jersey. I flew over subdivisions at 3000 feet with this great big airplane. We actually spent 1.0 hours on this flight- I was paid all of $103 + $2.05 per hour per diem! I never connected the autopilot- I flew this 747 for the full hour. This plane is SO stable that it really doesn't need an autopilot, but I'm glad they installed two of them since we fly this thing for 8-10 hours on a regular basis.

On this ferry flight, I just flew the thing for an hour over New Jersey. At one point, ATC pointed out a Grumman Tiger light airplane to us, about 1000 feet above. The pilot of that airplane came on the radio after my 747 was pointed out to him, and he was TOTALLY nervous:

"uh uh OH yeah...we see him down there!" The guy was flipping out, trying to remember the FAR's. He was totally cool: Not only was he above us, but he was to the right. According to the rules of the air, I would have to have given him the right of way, if he had been at our altitude.

Glad you liked it! The mechanic holding the camera behind my head made my landing look horrible. It was about "average" this time! The airplane was empty, and landing this airplane empty is totally different from landing it fully loaded. At least that is my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

What's the fun if you can't share it? You can thank the mechanic that was sitting over my left shoulder for the video. He did a GREAT job!

My parents watched this video, along with the "JFK Takeoff" thing, and they were both nearly in tears.

that was great; if that's all they had on the schedule I'd bid ferry flights all the time....then to the hotel and done....nice job, somedays I miss flying the old whale.
