Beautiful isn't necessarily pretty and can have very raw or harsh elements to it. Beauty is striking, and to an extent- dramatic. Pretty is more plain, simple, can be cute but relatively boring.

they said "at the end of the day all we want to make is beautiful things" but then in a recent interview they said "The most unhappy Laura and I have ever been was when we heard that we made 'a pretty dress"...hmm, contradiction?
