Short clips of Rick Casali teaching sculpture during one of his weekend workshops. Filmed at Maryland Hall in Annapolis Oct 2010. www.rickcasali.com www.marylandhall.org
@fiercekrypton As I said this is a teaching method that addresses the individual parts, step by step - an effort to memorize a human manikin or "secret figure". I've seen Rick sculpt from life, and in that instance he works the figure overall, in a fluid way. I agree this is not a practical way to proceed with art pieces, it is instead done to benefit the student.
@fiercekrypton but all that aside the main reason I said my previous post is because I have been taught never to "poke" or scrape my clay like he is doing. The entire body should be involved as one sculpts.
@CasaliArts I I actually like the end result, just not a fan of how he got there. I have been taught to build from within. This doesnt mean necessarily a polished end result it just means that the gesture of the spine comes first, then hips and rib cage then back of the skull(occipital) then clavicle then scapula then femur and main muscle grouping that comes from the greater trochnter of the femur and wraps inward then lower legs. All while using a tight measuring system based on the femu
@fiercekrypton This is one way that Rick teaches students how to see the figure as geometric planes. It is a step by step process and there is no live model. This method is not ecorche nor is the goal to produce a polished piece. The clips shown are taken directly from classroom lectures.
