Greece rejects German plan for EU 'budget control'

29/01 02:05 CET
Greek officials have rejected out of hand a German idea for Athens to cede control over its budget policy to a special eurozone commissioner.

It comes as the government and the country's private creditors said they were finalising a deal to slash Greece's debt, essential to secure a new bailout and avoid a default.

Both sides say the deal follows a framework put forward by eurozone finance ministers.

However, progress could be undermined by problems with the 'troika' of foreign lenders: the EU Commission, European Central Bank and IMF.

Their inspectors are back in town demanding unpopular reforms -- and threatening to hold up aid unless more is done to streamline the economy.

The Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos is trying to appease both sides.

Greeks reject German plan for EU budget commissioner
Greek officials have reacted angrily to a leaked German proposal for an EU budget commissioner with veto powers over Greek taxes and spending.

The Greek government said it must remain in control of its own budget.

The European Commission says it wants to reinforce its monitoring of Greek finances, but Greece should retain sovereign control.

Meanwhile, Greece and its private investors are close to a deal which will pave the way for a second bailout.

Greek government spokesman Pantelis Kapsis told the BBC the discussions between the two parties had gone well and they were "close to an agreement".

Greeks reject 'impossible' German plan for budget veto
Greece has rejected outright German proposals for the EU to hold power over its budget.

Culture Minister Pavlos Yeroulanos told the BBC it would be "impossible" for Greece to cede control of its tax and spending powers.

There are concerns the measures Greece has taken to cut its budget deficit have not gone far enough.

Meanwhile, Greece and its private creditors are close to a deal to cut dramatically the country's debt levels.

  • keiser report!!! :0)

  • @Dionasa I got your point. The problem with rich greeks is that probably the majority fled Greece. The are now in France, Britain, Germany,.... Yesterday I have heard that they bought real estates for about 1 BILLION Euro just in London. That´s money that belongs to a part to European Taxpayers, since the rich greeks didn´t pay taxes.Greek government has ALLOWED IT. That´s why Europe is angry!

And until now greek govt hasn´t declared them to be criminals so no country can do anything about it.

  • @LegioQuiaMultiSumus The loans bring more debt. The cuts more resecion. believe me the 80% of greeks want deffault.that's why athens burned before 2 days. Don't believe greek media who are under banksters control! On the other hand the situation brings more extremism here!!! but are not all greeks who don't pay taxes as your media write there. The rich greeks don't pay and gov . knows who they are. With some of theme Germany has good relations. Thats why greeks are angry.

  • @LegioQuiaMultiSumus hi, now a saw your comment. Yes you are right. Many people protested at 12/2 and supported deffault. we prefer deffault because its better to make a new start but this gov don't hear us. They voted A TERRIBLE plan memorendum. If you read this you will disgust. (its not only the cuts the problem , they voted yes for the commitment for all public property. eg ancient monuments etc) . Don't be surprise why the 2 left parties(they are not in gov) want deffault and a new start

  • @Dionasa First: I really do like the greek people and it is sad that they are suffering from the mismanagement of their government. But before you say NO just realise that your politicians are corrupt, unreliable and your country is by far the weakest in the eurozone with a government not even able to control its own tax system. All they do is to blame others for their own failures! Say NO to your government !!!

Why should a hard working european taxpayer pay for this mess over and over again?

  • white balance brous!

  • Greece should cooperate with the rest "piigs" and say a big NO to german dreams...

  • @SaGruenwdt better out of euro , as germans did it. As we know eu today is nothing more than a german toilete.. If greece say "yes" to this extremely proposal, then Portugal, Ireland, Spain, Italy , will follow...
